Alaskan Aurora
Spent about 16 days in the Alaskan Wilderness. It was often cloudy but on two nights, during the 'call of nature' I was blessed with both clear skies and aurora. Here is one example taken with my Nikon d700 and wide angle lens. Also, took a turbo prop plane back to Denver to Kansas City. The overhead bins were small and I had to put camera bag in cargo. I saw the bag fall about 5 feet off the cart, reported it to the stewardess, and everything seemed right with the camera upon arrival. Lenses appeared fine until the Nikkor 14-24 was used about a week later. Impact damage to the tune of $612 when submitted to Nikon factory repair; rear seal protruding from back and rear focus ring stiff. United won't belly up; have to report problem within 24 hours. NEVER leave your camera gear in the hands of others...

A wonderful shot, Larry, sorry to hear about you lense.

Can you give specifics on exposure time and settings?

I'll check the metadata and supply. This photo is pretty heavily processed with CaptureOne and CaptureNX2. I have some other shots at:
flickr.com/photos/syzygyphoto.
Warning for non-hunters--on this site are some photos of a moose taken by a friend. FYI: all the meat was removed including the bone--a requirement of Alaska Fish and Game to eliminate waste.
There are two sets of Aurora photos separated by non-Aurora photos if you go there.

Great shot. Sounds like a good trip up until the baggage incident. Stay on United to make it right.

When I fly small planes I take my camera out and carry it just to avoid that. I have also heard loading up a camera vest to wear your gear on as an idea.

That must have been a real treat to see something like that. I remember hearing on the news about the unusually bright Aurora about that time. I'm glad you were able to capture it. Thanks for showing us.
