Surfing Sea Lion Goes Hollywood!
The sea lion featured in my image "Catching the Wave" (which the NPN Wildlife Gallery moderators were kind enough to select as a Weekly Pick - and shown here) has just got a little more famous.
The UK newspaper the Daily Mail chose to run a story on that sea lion (and his buddies) - the online version of the story just came out yesterday (September 18). The writers didn't let the facts get in the way of a good story - their depiction of the event made it sound like the sea lions were almost jousting with human surfers on a popular beach (when in fact it the sea lions are in an incredibly remote and difficult to access location).
Anyway…if anyone is looking for a bit of giggle, just go here:
A more accurate account of the surfing sea lion spectacle can be found here on my website (just click on the "In the Field" tab below the image to see the real story):

I offer no excuses or defences for the journalistic integrity or accuracy of the British tabloids - but they do pay!
Fortunately, in this case their embellishments were quite benign and they didn't really distort the event too much.
