The River Road
Here is one from the Big Bend country of west Texas. Just west of the 880,000 acre Big Bend National Park is the 250,000 acre Big Bend Ranch State Park. Running west from the town of Lajitas to Presido is the paved FM 170, better known as "The River Road". A twisty narrow road along the Rio Grande that cuts through the edge of the state park. Some big empty desert mountain country.

Along the way is the "Big Hill" and the view from the top is pretty awesome both up and down the river. As well as the big drop into the Rio Grande on the back side.

Here is a mid afternoon view on my way back after photographing in Closed Canyon.

You can see more about the drive on my blog

Wow, that's some barren country, but I like it. I would guess a sunrise or sunset look would be worth the effort. Thanks for sharing, Darren.

Darren, I agree with Bill, early morning or late evening would add interest to this view.

Darren, We rode that road on the motorcycles one year. It was such a fun road to ride with all the curves and up/downs. The area is absolutely beautiful and that road is great for riding, driving and pictures! I too, thought it was a barren area, but when you see it up close it is amazing. At one point we were following a truck (going faster than we should have been) topped a hill and the guess who was on the other side! The truck was pulled over by the blue lights and we luckily rode on by.....whew......ha!
