Raising my back gate...
....a few inches paid off! When I replaced my back gate a few weeks ago and bemoaning the fact that I hadn't seen a hedgehog in my garden for some years, I thought that, by leaving a space at the bottom so that they could squeeze under, it might encourage any that may be around, to visit my wildlife friendly garden. After all I've plenty of slugs, snails and earthworms for their delectation. Sure enough, when I finally got round to renovating the path from the gate,
with some stone flags, this week, I heard some rustling under a pile of
logs I had made for a wildlife refuge, and there it was! I quickly grabbed my trusty W3 and managed a few shots using ambient light so as not to traumatise it with flash. On closer inspection it had built a nest of fallen leaves, obviously with the intention of hibernating in my garden, a honour indeed! It is still there safely tucked away for the coming winter, I hope it has a good snooze!

It might turn out to be just a summer nest, David, as they will not hibernate for about six weeks yet depending on weather, so don't be disappointed if it is not there next time you look. In the meanwhile, the subject really suits the 3D treatment.

Thanks, David. :wavey: I thought it was a bit early, unless, of course, it knows something we don't.

David I have just nursed a young Hedgehog that was nearly white spent a lot of time finding Snails and other such delicacy's to feed it on so done my little bit for them. As David says your 3D treatment really works very well .

Thanks Keith :wavey: Nice to read that you are helping to keep the population going. I understand they are partial to an apple or two, and other fruit of the windfall kind, when available, but cow milk is a no no apparently.

This works very well in 3D David. I once followed a hedgehog at dawn and watched it make a nest by rolling about in leaf litter until it had vanished. Great shot.

Thanks Nick :wavey: I bet that was a sight to see, well worth getting up early for.

It was David. I was out for the dawn chorus and this really made my day.
