I have been using a GOPRO to take short video clips on of my recent hikes. I have a dell computer with windows 7. Does anyone know of a simple to use editing program so I can stitch these videos together and edit portions out of them ?

I don't know a lot about video. I am unfamiliar with GOPRO. However, I have been using Windows Movie Maker which is a free download. It is very easy for video editing. It is perfect for simple editing for home videos or youtube quality.
Good luck!

Another thumbs up for the free Windows MovieMaker. A Web search will provide simple tutorials for whatever you wish to do with it.

Vote number 3! That's exactly what WMM does, you can even ad transitions in between clips and burn right to a DVD. WMM used to come preinstalled with XP and Vista, now you have to go fetch it. Just hit the Start globe and type "live essentials" and the link will show on the menu. Click that link to open the Microsoft webpage to download it. You'll have to download the entire Live Essentials suite, but when you go to install, just uncheck the other stuff.
