I was lucky to spend the July 4th weekend photographing the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest in the Patriarch Grove area of the Inyo National Forest and was treated to fantastic skies.
The hot stagnant weather made for ugly hazy skies as I drove up 395, so I was pleasantly surprised by what seemed like a micro climate in the White Mountain area. The mornings were unimpressive but in the early afternoons, like clockwork, beautiful clouds surrounded the higher elevation areas, providing the normally desired late afternoon conditions. Even better, the skies to the West remained relatively clearer, allowing the setting sun to light up the White Mountain clouds.
I don’t know if this is a normal summer weather pattern but it might be worth visiting if it is. Just thought I would share.
The cooler weather at 11,000 feet was a welcome relief from the hot weather in Bishop, lightning had me hiding in the truck, the colors were nice and the elevation made me feel weak and out of shape.
Disclosure: Photo 8811 is a composite, the sky exposure was captured in the Alabama Hills.
The focus of the trip was to photograph the stars. I was expecting the “Sierra curse” to provide clear skies, but darn it, those pretty clouds blocked the view….
I dropped down to the Alabama Hills for my last night to get some star exposures. Thanks for looking
