I was out with my 300 f/2.8 + 1.4 TC taking requisite shots of the moon, when I noticed that the lens seemed to pan easily in the WH200. Closer examination revealed that the screw that holds the Wimberly P30 plate to the lens plate was almost completely unscrewed. I carry the rig over my shoulder so this could have been a disaster. Anyone use a lock-tite product on these types of mountings?

You have to tighten it all down quite well. Carry the allen wrench with you in the field and check your equipment frequently. FWIW, I've had a plate on my 300/4 for years and it has never come loose.

If yours is coming loose frequently, a drop of Loctite may be worth a try.

If I recall correctly, the purple locktite is intended to break free easily when you try to loosen a screw, as opposed to the traditional version which can be a royal PITA to free. Read the labels, but there's one out there that does what you want. I used it on a number of plates a long time ago. Never an issue coming loose, and the one time I transfered plates between lenses, removal of the screws was a breeze. Too long ago to be able to state with certainty that it was the purple version, in fact. Aging brain cells, doncha know.

Kelly, give Loctite a call and ask them which one is the better suited for your application. I believe its the '242' but they are more qualified than me to let you know

Here is the number
In US Toll Free: 800-LOCTITE (800-562-8483)
In Canada, call: 800-263-5043

Good Luck

Kelly: "blue" Loctite is the one normally used when you want to be able to remove the fasteners. I use it on all my Lens plates, and have never had one work loose or had an issue when removing them.
