I recently made a trip to Wilson Lake, in north central Kansas, and one of my goals was to photograph this iconic rock formation. One of the photos I took was this backlit version. I posted a different version in the M&N gallery. The complete gallery of images from the trip can be found at
Tom, if you look at my facebook gallery, you can get a feel for how this pillar is situated. There are plenty of these types of pillars/rock formations in north central Kansas. This one happens to be located along the lake shore, which was built in the 50s/60s. When water levels are more normal, it doesn't look as separated from the neighboring rocks, but the low water levels have revealed the base.
Darren, your idea has merit, but I lack any ND that fit my current lenses. I need to invest in some, but my need for them hasn't been that great so far. I took the necessary shots for a true HDR blend for this image, but didn't like all of the detail in the rock.
Some inertesting shots, Rob. I've only been there once, but it looks like the low water has exposed some nice colored rocks that would be fun to shoot.

I might also then work in a different shot either blending or HDR to get a little more texture in the rock face.

But the small photos I saw were great.
