I'm finally moving up to a serious bird rig and want to ask the "Real" birders about setting up the rig.
I just added the Wimberly flash bracket and better beamer to my SB-800. It can be positioned several ways so I picked one. I went as high as it would go and mounted it with the upright toward the rear instead of the front for clearance because I lay my left forearm on top of the Wimberley and rest my hand on top of the lens for better position control and vibration damping. I also noticed the Beamer had a tendency to "sag" a bit so I shimmed it at the upper front and lower rear flash head contact points which seemed to snug it up and keep it pointed pretty much parallel with the lens.
I attached a photo. Please look at this set-up and tell me if I've done anything stupid
"Doesn't the SB800 fire with wireless iTTL anyway? Why not ditch the cord?
Kent in SD"
Because that darn cord is so expensive
Seriously, I've used the SB-800 and the SB-600 wireless but they sometimes get confused in bright daylight. I didn't want to risk a potential "shot of a lifetime" on a cordless remote flash not firing.
Me thinks you may have me confused with Mike Moats and while I would love to have produced leaf work to draw the comparison, I'm afraid I'm woefully short on talent in that department.

Seriously it looks good. You might want to add external power to the flash for faster recycle time.
Wrong color?"
I agree...it's just not balck enough
Cheers,
