I'm shooting a 6x7 Mamiya, longest lens a 250mm and looking at a Gitzo for it. I was hoping for a 4 section maybe a 1228CF but may need to look at a 13 series. don't know. Any suggestions
I have a friend who use 1228. It works fine. I have the lightest 1101Gitzo which no longer made and have used it with P67 and his RZ. It was much easier to use RZ due to revolving back and WLF. I used P67 with WLF and verticals were difficult but not impossible.
So as usual my advice is - get the heaviest tripod you wish to lug around. I plan to replace my G1101 with either VelbonCM641 or 541.
I have both the 1228 and 1349. No qualms about weight support with either and the RB, though the 1349 definitely "feels" sturdier. With the WL finder on the RB, max height with either is not an issue, though the 1228 is too short for prolonged use with my 6'4" frame and 35mm. The 1228 is noticeably lighter, though the 1349 is not a problem at all. Head choice should be carefully considered though, in light of panning smoothness if you are considering a small, lightweight ballhead to hold down overall weight. I use AS B-1's on both and there's no problem, but I'd read the specs pretty carefully if you wanted something a lot smaller.
I would think that the 200 series of Gitzo would work fine. I have the 1325 (300 series), which I consider an outstanding tripod. It might be overkill for what you're looking for though. I am average height and get by fine with a 3-section model. I prefer the 3-section because they are faster to set up, something important to me since many of my subjects are on the move.
Thanks ended up getting the 1227 (3leg version), With ball head and camera only need about 2/3 height. Wow why did I wait so long to get a Gitzo so well made
