So far here in the Catskill mountains of New York it is looking like a good year for spring wild flowers. Here is a photo of a purple trillium I did the other weekend here in the northern Catskill mountains. Taken with Nikon D2x, 300mm f4.0 lens, 1/320 sec, f5.0, -0.67 exposure bias, 400 iso, R1C1 flash system.
Jim - This is pretty much the crop in camera, may have just a little taken off around the edges.
Nick - The R1C1 flash system is Nikon's new macro twin light macro flash. The nice thing about this system it is wireless and the macro flash units can be un-mounted from the front of lens and placed arround your subject. This shot I put one unit on ground looking up at Trillium and the other unit I held in my hand pointing down. From the wireless commander modual attached to the hot shoe of camera you can control the output of each flash unit to balance the light. The system is very much like Canon's twin light macro flash but without the cables.
I also posted a photo in the FLORA section of a purple trillium done with natural light, I feel natural light still looks better. Need to keep working on the macro light flash to get better.
A nice comp and good lighting with the flash. I agree that natural light is generally better but this one looks pretty good. I find lots of white and painted trillium in Mass, NH, and Maine, but I have never found a purple Trillium. I photographed one in southern Vermont a couple of years ago, so I am still looking for onein e Mass, NH, or Maine!
Thanks for your comments. Here in New York the purple trillium is the first to come out, they bloom approximately 1-2 weeks before the white and painted bloom. And I will also say they are not as plentifull has the other variations here in New York. I am lucking I am only 1 hour away from the Spruceton Valley which is were a always find the trilliums. Starting near the middle of April I try to get up there once during the weekend and check to see if they are out. This past Sunday the painted were blooming, will post a painted trillium in next day or so.
Good luck in your hunt for the purple trillium
Robert
Robert,
I like the natural lighting best, but this is pretty nice too! The purple trillium is all I have around my house. I have never seen any other kind in this area. I live in Central VT. They've all been ruined by all this recent rain, though. I got a few shots, but none I was happy with before all the wet weather.
