I am very tempted (nearly committed!) to upgrade from my 10D to a 1D 11N. However, I am having difficulty getting accurate information from canon or elsewhere on the web. Firstly, does the body have two shutter release buttons, ie an extra one when you turn the camera through 90 degrees to shoot in portrait format? (The 10D required an accessory for this).

Secondly, the issue of autofocus with a 2x convertor. My longest lens is a canon 300mm EF f4 IS. It doesn't autofocus with the 2x on the 10D, even after taping the pins as has been suggested. Does anyone use this lens and converter with a 1d mk11N and find it autofucusses OK?

Thanks for your help.

1. Yes, there is a vertical shutter release.

2. Yes, the 1D will AF with any f4 or faster lens and a 2X. With an f4 lens, only the center focus point will be active with the 2X. A faster lens, like a f2.8, will allow all focus points to be used with a 2X.

Thanks Bob - That's what I thought for both. However, the person I spoke to at Canon said the opposite to both questions. I got the distinct impression she did not know anything about the camera! I'm going for it - the 500 or 600 lens will have to wait!

Hi Ian,
I have owned an eos 10 d for quite a few years and it was my favorite camera. 2 1/2 years ago I purchased the 1d mark ii, and what a difference. The only drawback is that the LCD is too small. This has been changed with the mark iiN. You will reallly enjoy this camera.
Bob is quite right in what he says about the 2x teleconverter. There are no problems using the 1.4x. I have had some problems with the 2x in low light conditions, unless I use a faster lens, 2.8. I have just purchased the 180mm macro lens and I plan to use the 2x on that.
Good luck with the mark ii n.

Great combo Gene, you'll love it!

Ian, the MIIN is a great camera to work with, it is light years away from your 10D. However, be aware that a one series camera is quite a brick compared to the 1,6 crop cameras.

Best,
Sven

Yes, Sven, time for me to visit the gymnasium to work on the biceps! Can't wait to try it out when it arrives.
