soft light?
I think the sky is still to light. In some of the other photos I took at this same time on the viewfinder I have the blinkies. How could I have corrected that?

Michelle,

The first image is probably a better example of soft light than the second one. The second image has some direct light because of the sun. When you think of soft light, think of dawn dusk, but also overcast or cloudy conditions. If you can see shadows, then it's not soft light. The lack of shadows - or bright highlights - is the advantage of using soft light.

To get rid of blinkies, you need to underexpose until they go away. If you are using aperture or shutter priority, you would make it darker my using exposure compensation.

Going back to your first image, the only thing I would change is the amount of sky in the image. The sky is kind of boring with no clouds, so I wouldn't have included as much sky as you did.
