An unusual nocturnal visitor to our bird feeders tonight. The outdoor temperature was -32 F. With flash, you get one shot and the squirrel is gone like greased lightning.

That's pretty cool, Jim. I had no idea flying squirrels lived up here. Where I grew up back east we had a lot of them. I used to stand still against a tree trunk and call them in by imitating their squeaking. They would "fly" to the tree I was under then come running down the trunk to investigate. Don't know if they were coming to defend territory or what. But they really came fast to the call.

Dan - depending on where you lived and how old you are because they may have been southern flying squirrels - the southerns are marching north and excluding the northerns from the lower 48 - climate change is accused at times although the precise mechanism is not known - it maybe coming through the actions of a shared parasite

I grew up in SC and left there in early '80s so presumably they were the southern variety. Cute little buggers.
Being nocturnal they must get hungry up here during the summer
