I feel a bit silly asking this, because I think it is probably just a ground squirrel, but is it a ground squirrel or is it a juvenile marmot? The nose color makes me think marmot. The size and shape, ground squirrel. This was at 8,000 plus feet in Lassen National Park, Northern CA.

Looks like a young yellow-bellied marmot to me.

The white on the face is distinctive, Ed. And in Lassen, there's only one species of marmot. So Yellow-bellied Marmot.

Is it a marmot? Yes.
Is it a ground squirrel? Yes.

Thanks everyone for your confirmation. David, I guess, thinking about it that makes a lot of sense both ways.
