The Sandhill Crane Festival will be under way in Fairbanks Friday, August 24 - Sunday August 26, 2012. The guest speaker is George Archibald, co-founder of the International Crane Foundation.
The photo opportunities for Sandhill Cranes are terrific. Creamer's Refuge will be moving to autumn colors. If you haven't listened to 2,000-4,000 Sandhill Cranes all calling at once, this is your chance.

I was there last year at the Fish/Game while a friend checked his Dall Sheep in.
There were really a lot of birds and quite a photo op although I had moisture issues in my Nikon D300. Seems gravity work in Alsaka, too, and it took dunk into the stream for about 1 second. I was determined not to turn the camera on until it spent some low heat time in the oven and dried rice. Worked. The camera functioned but I missed the day of Sandhill Cranes and other waterfowl.
This from a Kansas lad who encourages anyone who can make it to to do so.
