What are the "major" differences between the two that would make me want to spend "around" $200 more for the D70s. I will be doing mostly wildlife and macro work and would really like to save as much as I can so I can get some good lenses.
I wish I could tell you the difference Darren. I have the D70 and have really liked it, though I have had a few problems with it. I think I just had some bad luck with the one that I got.
If you want to save even more money, over in the 'Regional: CNP' forum (in the forum list), Steve Weaver has a used D70 listed for sale in the classifieds thread.
I've really enjoyed the D70. A friend of mine has a D50 and although I don't know all the differences, I do know it does not use compact flash cards. Not sure if that matters much or not.
Hi Darren there are a few differences between the two but as a D70 user I should go for the D70s. If you realy want to compare both than you can go to the following site which is great for all that concerns Digital cameras and where you can put both cameras next to each other to look at the differences. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sidebyside.asp
Hope this helps.
One thing the D50 lacks is a depth of field preview button (at least I can't see one in any pictures of the camera and it's not listed in the tech specs on the Nikon site). In my opinion, this feature is invaluable so the D50 would not be a camera I would buy, simply because of this lack. The D70 definitely has one.
Since you say you'd be using the camera for macro work, the DOF preview button becomes even more important to have. Is it worth an extra $200? I'd say yes.
I'd say the two things you will miss most are the DOF preview (as mentioned above) and mirror lock up (dunno if the D70s has this, but I would think so). However, I have heard people say that the missing DOF preview isn't all that bad (since when you really stop down and use DOF PV, you won't see much in the viewfinder anyway & judging what is sharp and what is not will be difficult), but I guess you'll have to judge yourself.
