Rodney, I suggest you contact Steve Sieren through his web-site. I know he lives in that general area and he has shot in those mountains quite often. Although he has not posted here recently he has had some very fine images from that area in the past.

Hey Rodney, there are many spots to photograph in the Santa Monica Range, it's a coastal range so it's full of canyons and beaches. Most scenic of the canyons that is easily accessible is Malibu Canyon where it begins at Malibu Creek State Park is great for photography. Lots of crags and sycamores mixed in old oaks. Sandstone Peak is another great one for scenic views of the range and the all the Channel Islands on a clear day. The most popular beach El Matador but beware it can get very crowded, don't let portrait photographers tell what to do there. Leo Carillo is another where you find a few iconic shots. There are many other beaches to find the old rocks, surf and a sunset just about everywhere off Pacific Coast Highway. Lots of hidden gems in the range, I live next door so I've spent a lot of time with the local scenery and think it helped me become a better photographer faster. Most of the photos in this gallery were taken in the Santa Monica Mountains.
Just looked through your gallery from that area, some amazing work Steve. It really shows talent to find those hidden gems in that somewhat urban area.
