I am pleased to announce that juror Susan Thompson of the Guggenheim Museum of Art in NYC has selected my photograph "Back in Her Arms" as one of 70 images from over 1,000 submitted from across the U.S. for display in PHOTOWORK ‘12, the Barrett Art Center’s 25th Annual National Juried Photography Exhibition.
This is the 2nd time one of my photos has been chosen by a Guggenheim juror for this annual exhibit, the first being "Praying for Salvation" in 2010.
As I was heading out from my hometown to going nature shooting last April, I saw the plume of smoke and the scene was cordoned off by a dozen or more rescue, fire and police units. My first site was a long-time friend on a stretcher, he and his girlfriend had escaped the blaze. Unfortunately, her father did not, and perished by the time I got there. The statue of Mary was still standing, on a street corner nearby where two Catholic churches had been closed and razed. Once I spotted that, the poignant composition jumped out at me. So it is a bittersweet acceptance--this was one of four images I submitted, the other three being "pretty" nature scenes.
For those NENP friends who may be interested, or live in the Poughkeepsie, NY area... the PHOTOWORK ‘12, Barrett Art Center’s 25th Annual National Juried Photography Exhibit, will have an opening reception on Saturday, May 12, 4:00 – 6:00 pm, at 55 Noxon Street, Poughkeepsie, NY. The exhibit will remain up and open during regular gallery hours until July 7th.
