You folks carry around a lot of heavy stuff, so this is a good place to ask this question. When I was at Orlando Wetlands Park a few weeks back I noticed a clunking sound coming from my camera/lens when I was walking with it slung over my shoulder attached to a monopod. The camera is a Canon EOS 1D MkII N and the lens was an EF 300 f/2.8 L IS with a TC1.4 II attached. When I got home I took the camera out of the bag and wiggled the connection between the body and the TC and sure enough, I could hear a clunking sound and discern a bit of movement. I took the TC out of the equation and still heard and felt the clunk when I put some rotational force between the lens and body. I tried another TC and got the same results. That annoyed me, so since that time I have tested all of my lenses with the following results:
EF 24-70 f/2.8 L no clunk
EF 24-105 f/4 L IS no clunk
EF 16-35 f/2.8 L no clunk
EF 100 f/2.8 Macro no clunk
EF 180 f/3.5 L Macro clunk
EF 70-200 f/2.8 L IS clunk
EF 70-200 f/2.8 L IS copy 2 clunk
EF 300 f/2.8 L IS clunk
EF 500 f/4 L IS clunk
TC 1.4 II clunk on both ends
TC 2.0 II clunk on both ends
I'll check some of the clunkers on a 20D body tonight and see if they still clunk. I was just wondering if something might be wrong with the mount on my body. Is it normal to hear and feel a little clunk at the mounting points? Maybe I should send the body back to Canon (again - went for new AF PCB the first time) while it is still under warranty?
I checked the screws on the body and several clunkers and they are all tight. Darn they are small! I checked them on my wife's 20D body and they all clunk there too. I sent a note off to Canon Support to see if this is normal, but I suspect it is. Maybe real close tolerances would make it difficult to lock and unlock the bayonette mounts. It seems odd that Canon would design in another mode of movement, especially in the big glass where motion is so difficult to control.
