Spring has Sprung in the Smokies - Please Share Your Discoveries !!!
Hey folks,

I took a long weekend camping/fishing trip March 8-11 and was blown away by everything blooming. I was on Big Creek to fish but after a 12 hour rain on thursday March 8th the creek was really too high and fast...so I headed back to camp and grabbed my camera gear and headed back out. As you have read in other post Spring is way ahead of schedule. Three weeks possibly in places. The forest floor was covered in Yellow Trillium. I think I counted over 12 different species blooming or about to bloom stage. I have never seen this early of a bloom in my lfe as a photographer. Unreal !!!

Flowers I witnessed blooming were Bloodroot, Halberdleaf Yellow Violet, Yellow Trillium, Spring Beauty, Marsh Blue violet,Wild Geranium, Toothwort, Ragwort, Virginia Blue Bell, Trout lily, Phacelia, Wood Sorrel and Hepatica.

Anyway I wanted to start this thread with an example of my findings. Please take a moment snd share your discoveries of what you find when and where so we can all keep up on the quick transition from Winter to Spring this year...

Happy Journeys,

Harold

There was some nice stuff posted on one of the GSMNP affiliated Facebook pages this morning showing a collage of wildflowers taken on the TN side in the Greenbrier and Roaring Fork areas.

Thanks for the suggested updates Peyton. I am headed over to Porters Creek Trail Early tomorrow Morning (Sunday-March 25th) then maybe on up to Roaring fork motor trail. I will give everyone an update when I get back tomorrow night. Don't know if anyone else shoots pictures in this forum or just looks..?????

Please...if you have been out shooting anywhere this spring...share some of your work and tell us whats happening.

Thanks and happy shooting.

Harold

Hello to all

yesterday the dogwoods were in full bloom along Little River Road - sweet whit trillium along the same grandiflora and phacelia at Chimneys picnic area and above along the hairpin bends

phlox there and laong Little River Road - that suggests WO sinks is at prime but I have no first or second hand knowledge - I will be taking a friend out somewhere on Monday - working at the "body shop" this weekend. Will post a followup

the sweet whites came up ealry the littel side stream near the "Y" that is so popular is not as godo this year due to a very large hole in a major leaf - its possible to postion the blossom "just so" and minimiaze it but requres care - it could be on its way out soon

redbuds were good along Foothills parkway east around mid-week last week

everything ismoving very fast

Tremont is so-so at best - many of the dogwoods in the classic comps went mostly to leaf LR Road is better

Here's one of my favorites from this past weekend. This was taken at a pull off on the Newfound Gap Road just south of the Chimneys Picnic Area. It was raining when we pull over and everyone but the photographers were in their cars and heading for the restaurants and hotels. We hung around here for a while because it was a riot of color and flowers. Large Yellow Trillium surrounded by Fringed Phcelia and Bishops Caps. There were White Trillium and Phlox plus others I don't remember.

This was my first trip out with my new 5D Mark ii and I'm loving that full frame with my 17-40 lens. I was only a few inches from that Yellow Trillium in the bottom of the frame and was still able to capture a large part of the field of wildflowers.

I'm amazed at the detail I was able to capture in this image. I'd like to print it but I think it needs to be big to appreciate.

Richard, this is as fine a spring wildflower image as I have seen in a long, long time. If you could lighten your shadow some at the bottom of the image or, perhaps better yet, crop 1/3 way up the bottom trillium leaf I think you could do great things with this image. Great composition, color, vibrance, etc. You may have been the first one to find an S curve with Trillium! :toast:
