Light tent verses soft box?

I'm going through winter "flower photography" withdrawal now that I can't just walk around the neighborhood with my macro lens and want to give indoor shooting a try. Unfortunately I don't have any good window light so I'm considering getting a light tent and a couple of color balanced florescent lights, or two soft boxes and a device to hold a background. What are the pros and cons of each method? I will be using a card table or large desk as the working surface.

With the light tent you are limited in subject size and position by the size of the tent. You are also limited in how far from the subject the background will be. On the plus side it is a more controlled light environment unless you are working in an otherwise darkened room.

The plus to softboxes on freestanding lights is that you can also use them to photograph things that don't fit in the box, for example, people.
