Marie, identifying asters is challenging even if you have the plant and a field guide in your hands. Based on comparing your picture with Newcomb's Wildflower Guide my first choice is the Stiff Aster (formerly Aster linariifolius recently renamed to Ionactis linariifolius). The description is" Violet flowers; heads about 1" wide, leaves 3/4-1-1/2" long, stiff and numerous; plant of dry sandy or rocky soil.
