Richard- Great idea. I was on Skyline Drive last Saturday and there are a few trees just starting to show some color. I'm off to the Blue Ridge Parkway towards Roanoke this weekend so I will report what I see there if it is worth sharing. I hope to see lots of posts.

Hey folks! Trying to decide where to go for my fall color trip this year; last year I spent the last week of Oct in the Smokies and was very impressed with the color, especially in the lower elevations. The attached pic is from last year about the 28th or 29th at the Ramsey Cascade area, which had the most intense color I've ever seen. Any guesses as to how this year might compare with last year? Was last year considered a good year, or is that just typical for fall color in the Smokies?

Drove Smokies and BRp yesterday to scout - for those nto aware Oct 1-3 brought very cold temps to the high country Leconte lows as low as 21 - 21-25 for 3 nights - Newfound Gap a little belwo freezing for those 3 nights - Little River looked OK w spottyareas starting to turn but not global - Locally advanced color above Alum CAve Bluffs but tapered off to a blush approaching Morton - some frost burn to the beeches along road to clingmans dome - Ash lost most of their leaqves but kept all theberries - bright - intense - best inseveral years
BRP - soco Gap starting to turn - seems a bit ealry there Graveyard fields looks rusty but otherwise hopeful that is just a phase - often it will turn brilliant after that phase - overall on the BRp nto much frost damage - some spotty color - ridges are turning from LeConte into the Pisgah Area but jsut starting - I suspect good color in the high country in about a week adn peak a few days after at thehigh elevations - so... sorta early in spots to on time ?? but wtfdik? It oughta be good somewhere sometime - C U out there
I drove down to knoxville from richmond. Very limited color change crossing over shenandoah mountains by afton. But colors were much better, ,aybe 50 percent in the highlands and near grayson state park. I didnt go up to the parkway so am sure its better there. Am heading into smolkies tomorrow morning and will report.

I just came back from a couple of days in WVA Dolly Sods and Blackwater Falls. Color was approaching peak but some trees have already dropped their leaves due to snow and rain early in the week. Shenandoah has maybe 20% color change and typically reaches peak closer to the end of October.
I spent Saturday morning in Cades Cove. Though the colors on the hillsides were still overwhelmingly green, the colors in the Cove itself, especially the meadows and trees within, showed some decent color. Here are two shots:.

Any word on current status in the Smokies? I was at Roaring Fork and Greenbrier on Friday. Roaring Fork was good and looked like it might hold for a few days and Greenbrier was still coming on along the Ramsey Prong. I think it should be good this week.
