Having just returned from a long business trip I had pretty much talked myself out of a trip up to Antelope Valley... but I decided at the last minute to make a trip up there today.
For starters, DAMN is was windy. Very difficult conditions!
Anyway, my vote is to find the intersection of Gaskell Rd. and 200th St; base yourself there and work w/in a 4 mile radius and you're all set. Completely ignore the Poppy Preserve... basically, forget where you went last year completely.

For the wind, I now check the weather underground, at the bottom are a bunch of personal weather stations online, and you can get a pretty good idea of how windy it is up there. I use Quartz Hill as my search city, then if the winds seem below 10mph, then it is probably good to go up there, wind wise.( I even like it when it is below 5 mph better).
