National Geographic Features the Spirit Bear

National Geographic magazine has featured the Spirit Bear as its cover story in their August 2011 edition. The Spirit Bear is a very rare, genetically-based colour variant of the American Black Bear that possesses a white coat and is found almost exclusively in a portion of the Great Bear Rainforest along the central BC coast - a region that NGM refers to as "The Wildest Place in North America". If you haven't already seen the article I'd recommend having a look at it - it's a good read (and with some nice photos of the bears).

The article can be read right here on NGM's website...

And Paul Nicklen's gallery of photos for the article can be found right here...

And...being a helpful kind of guy (), I've put together an "index" of additional Spirit Bear images that your's truly has captured over the last few years - you'll find that listing under the August 5 entry on my blog...

Cheers...

It seems like I've been waiting for this feature forever. I believe Nicklen shot a lot of his material for this article in 2009 right before I made my visit there. I heard all about it and then kept wondering when we'd finally get to see the images.

Hi Max,

I know Paul was there in September 2010 and shot a lot of the shots then. I had no knowledge of him being there in 2009, but that doesn't mean he wasn't there (so you could be right).

Cheers...
