I sometimes click on the "All Photos" gallery because I want to see a larger version of the image currently on the front page of the gallery. Every time, I am frustrated because I don't get directly to the image I clicked on. In fact, most of the time I am unable to find the image I want. I suppose the purpose of "All Photos" is to encourage browsing, but I it wasn't done with a bait-and-switch technique.
The "NPN front page" has a big block that says "All Photos Gallery" on the top and "Click Thumbnail to View" on the bottom.
The picture in the block changes often. I assume it is selected semi-randomly. Now, when there is a photograph I want to view larger in the box what do I do? I click the thumbnail, expecting to get a larger view. Instead, I am sent to the "All Photos" gallery, which would be ok if I were directed to that photograph, but often the photograph from the thumbnail is not on the front page - usually I don't have the patience to keep scrolling through hoping to find it. Now do you know what I mean?
That is simply an entry page to some selected galleries. I can't speak for Jim, but I expect that page is not meant to showcase individual images with subsequent links to the very image. The images on that page don't just randomly change, they change every time your browser gets refreshed. It's a fairly common practice.
Maybe you could change your start page to the "All Photos" page and you'll always see the latest images. Looking at 6 random images on the home page seems rather limited if that's where you're looking for new or interesting images.
Don't see any bait-n-switch tactics, just pretty standard web page navigation.
The text should say "Click Thumbnail to Enter Gallery." In the unlikely event that anyone reads the text, that would explain why (unlike most other thumbnails at NPN) it doesn't take you to a larger view of the image shown.
