Folks, I could really use some assistance. I've been hard at work on a black and white (actually sepia) series of images that depict people in Everyday Life scenes. Most of the images (but not all) could have been submitted to Man and Nature or here on Photo Art.

I've taken all of the images and used the same treatment. I used NIK software to obtain the sepia layer, but modified it so that any graininess was eliminated, and in all cases, I used a circular vignette. Other than that, no manipulation was done. The images have been shot with a variety of cameras, ranging from a Coolpix 990 to the D700 I currently use.

I've posted 10 images on zenfolio. Now I need to narrow these down to five images. Please feel free to leave notes on Zenfolio or drop me a line.

Your participation in selecting these photos is both appreciated and needed.

Thanks,

:wavey:

Nice collection of images - but what are the criteria for choosing? The "Best"? Most artistic? the best "story"?

Thanks for your comment, Sandy. I wish I knew the criteria. All I know is that the images need to fit the theme which is Everyday Lives. Converting all of the images to black and white and using the same techniques are both my ideas; I'm not the judge. I sure wish I were.

Thanks for your interest.

Ok - these are the ones I'd vote for:

1. Girls on the beach - delightful, and the title is perfect
2. the arm-in-arm couple - easy, carefree, intimate
3. Stop sign - conveys a waste of time we all know! Crossed legs are perfect.
4. Kid with wet pants-
5. rollercoaster - fun summertime memories

Great series

#1-'Playing Hooky'

#2-'Our Own Private World'

#3-'The Old Swimming Hole'

These three are the best of the lot, IMO. They are the ones that work best with your choice of 'development'. Well done, Carol!

I'm having trouble narrowing it down to five, but I do think The Old Swimming Hole and the roller coaster shot are my two favorites.

Carol,

I'm going with Sandy's top 4. Those are all solid for me. I'm torn between the whale watching and roller coaster (#8 & #6) as the 5th. They all tell good stories and represent every day life well. I also think you did a great job with the processing and presentation. Having said that, and not knowing the context for the submission/contest, it could be hit and miss as to whether or not they will be accepted well by reviewers/judges. If for editorial type content and/or publishing, I'm guessing those folks usually reserve the artsy finishes for their own production. Then again, if this is more of an artsy contest and/or the finished product has some weight, then you may have an edge. We'll be curious to know the outcome. Good luck!

Carol,

My vote is for #3,4,5,7 and 8 (in the order they appear on the site from left to right). Good luck!

They're all nicely done. The ones that seem most "everyday" to me are #2,3,4,7,8. The others might be "everyday" for some people :-). The processing theme is nice.

I only see 7 images Carol. But I vote for the couple holding hands, the roller coaster, Playing hooky, The Old Swimming Hole and Watching for Whales... By the way, I like your use of vignetting.

Tally one more vote for 23478.

Folks, First and foremost, a thank you to all of you who have viewed this posting and in particular to those who have taken the time to add a comment or drop me a note. I'm honestly blown away by your response.

Here's where we stand at this point...
The heavy favorites are:
3-Our Own Private World with 7 votes
4-Playing Hooky, also with 7 votes
7-Suspended in Space with 6.5 votes
8-The Old Swimming Hole with 8 votes

Now we come to the following, still very much under consideration ...
2-Killing Time with 4 votes
10-Watching for Whales with 2.5 votes
1-Heavy Construction with 2 votes
5-Reaching for the Bell with 1 vote

I think at this point we can safely say that 6-Shooting the Sea (I think the couple is quite stiff) and 9-Tide Pool Treasures (harsh lighting) are also-rans.

At the moment the choices look like 2,3,4,7,8. This is a tough call. It's been an extraordinarily fun project for me, and I'll be honest, (like all of us) I would love to get the recognition that comes with winning a prize.

For me, along with composition and lighting, the idea of creating a mood and telling a story in a photograph is what is important. While it's wonderful to be able to post directly from the camera with only minimal changes, I also feel that so much can be done in post-processing to enhance the feeling in an image.

Enough philosophy! Time to return to a work-aday world. I'm expecting a new lens (f/4 24-120mm) and I can't wait to get it in my hands.

Thank you again,

:wavey:

That made me laugh! I like many of the images by the way Carol but I will leave the voting up to others.
