My new computer that I ordered from Puget Systems last week (just before this 'group buy') has been shipped! I should have it next Tuesday!
While my machine has somewhat different specs from those in the 'group buy', you can be assured that the components of the machine in the 'buy' are top-notch, and are vigorously tested.
I am very impressed by Puget Systems! If you are looking for a new machine, this 'group buy' will be the ticket to a lean, mean, and seriously quiet workstation with the best customer support you'll ever find!
When the 5D Mark II came out, I went looney and got the Production Premium CS4 Suite so I'd have Premiere Pro and Soundbooth to go with Photoshop Extended. Dumb as I was, I though I could run this on a 2006 dual-core Dell Laptop with 3.3GB of ram. The first night I tried to render video I had to abort because had I left it running I would have fried the CPU.
OK, my point: I've since built a monstrous rig with an i7 CPU, 24GB ram, RAID drives, yadda yadda yadda, well over $3K. To run PS on a rig like this is a dream, it opens up in 5 seconds, ready to roll. The PC is like a Saturn V rocket, and now that I'm on it, there's no going back to slow consumer PCs. SO, if you've been thinking about getting a PC with some serious power and don't really know where to turn, please don't look at the mass-produced bargain PCs, they won't cut it. Building a rig is the only way to go, but how many folks can or want to do that? This deal that Puget is offering is VERY appealing, they are not adding that much for labor at all. I'm seeing the components they are using, and while $1900 is an initial shock for some, it's peanuts compared to what a pro rig can cost you. If I didn't want to build my own but wanted a custom rig, I'd hop on this offering in a heartbeat. NO, I don't work for Puget, I don't even know who they are, but I wanted to reassure anyone who's considering this purchase that you are getting a quality rig based on the components they have chosen. They are even using the i7-2600K, a killer CPU! Photoshop will scream on that, especially with the graphics card they are offering. DO NOT try to save money and nix the graphics card, it's equivalent to pulling a spark plug wire on a V8 Hemi. This PC as stated is worth the bucks. And the beauty is that you can easily customize it later if you want to expand. Try replacing a broken Dell power supply with a standard one from an electronics store and you'll find that standard components won;t always work.
OK, having said that, there is one option you need to know about if you are planning on tackling the video road and will be using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5: You MUST go for the option to switch to the GTX570 video card. Adobe only leverages NVidia Cards for Premiere right now, so you can't use the ATI card that is in the original specs, Premiere won't see it. For Photoshop it's perfectly fine, it sees both NVidia and ATI cards. For Premiere though, I do suggest the 570, it is the best power-for-dollar for Premiere Pro, because Premiere is all about CUDA cores, and that GTX570 gives you a whopping 480 of them. Your 5D Mark II video will run smooth as silk with this card in the Puget rig. Down the road you can toss in another hard drive to hold your video clips which will smooth out playback even more.
OK, sorry for the long post, I just wanted folks to know that if you're shopping for big guns, this IS a great deal, and for video editing in Premiere Pro you need an NVidia card. Over and out.
OK, brace yourself for a stupid question.
It looks like this offer does not include monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Would my existing ones from an old Dell (XP operating system) work? Suggestions on the best way to go here are most welcome.
Thanks
George, we'd be happy to be flexible with the OS purchased with the system, as long as it is Windows 7 and 64bit (so you can use all that 8GB memory!)
Paula, your existing keyboard, mouse and monitor are likely fine to use. The only thing to consider is that the system only has one PS/2 port, and the rest of the ports for keyboard and mouse are USB (PS/2 is just a stone's throw from being phased out of usage entirely on modern computers). If both your keyboard and mouse are PS/2, then you will only be able to use one of them.
Regarding using an old copy of XP, that will not be workable for this system. Beyond licensing concerns, Windows XP only supports 4GB memory, including video memory, so you'd only be using less the half of the memory of the system with XP. This group buy also requires an OS to be sold with the system, so we can perform all our testing, and provide thorough tech support.
Jon,
I have my PC order ready to go in my Puget Systems account. I just sent Puget an email to please review my revisions and make sure everything fits together as intended before I place the order.
Paula, I've had my Puget Systems machine for a few weeks now, and I must say I'm very impressed! It's been working without a hitch and it looks great inside and out! Win 7 is great!

This is just a reminder that today is the last day for this group buy. I will be available until 6pm PST for any questions, either to jonbach at pugetsystems dot com, or here in this thread. At the end of our business day, I'll close out the group buy and process the orders in queue. Thanks for everyone's participation!
