I was having a LOT of trouble with bears tearing down my nestboxes. I found a terrific plan a man named Dick Purvis from So. Calif came up with. Thought I'd share it with everyone here who loves helping out the birds http://www.socalbluebirds.org/docs/Nestbox_Assembly_Guide.pdf
What good timing! I've seen several mountain BB's in the yard here, for the first time, and was looking for nest box plans.
Thanks!!

I doubt that it would help with bears, but this does help with raccoons, squirrels and snakes: mix tractor grease and cayenne pepper together and "grease" the poles.
I have a problem with raccoons into everything. They will work around the grease, but hate the cayenne pepper and will eventually stop trying. And the pepper doesn't bother the birds.
Good Luck with those bears!

Thought I would post that we had a VERY successful nesting season this year. Not one box was disturbed. We had three pairs of violet-green swallows, one white-breasted nuthatch, one western bluebird fledged. Very happy!
