Good evening. I will be going to the Cabins at Lopstick in Pittsburg, NH - May 13 - 15 in hope to see Moose & other wildlife. I would appreciate any comments, suggestions, etc.
I had a guide show me around up there a few years back. He took me down a road on the right hand side of the main drag up there. We investigated all the side logging roads and dirt paths. There was one that was particularly fruitful. It was near this rustic logging cabin kind of at a fork in the road. They had a special name for this cabin and people up there should know it. Obviously early mornings are in store for moose sightings. Also if you cruise up and down that main road at dusk you should see some as well. I also saw plenty of grouse while I was up there.

Ask the locals. More likely than not they know of places where moose are regularly seen. Many people like to just drive there to see them. Also, at that time of year, moose quite often are seen by the side of the road in wet areas. Some theorize they are getting salt used for winter highway maintenance. At least this is what the used to do in Maine. I doubt NH is different. If you do go out looking for moose either early or late and are driving in the dark, please drive attentively. Moose are notoriously difficult to see as they are mostly a dark animal. With a deer, you usually hit it with your front fender. Because moose are so tall, they tend to come over the hood of the car and often into the windshield. Maine has had many fatalities through the years because of this. Those moose crossing signs are not to disregard. Other than that, I hope you have a good time and get some great images. Moose are really neat critters.
