Borders: A help or a hindrance?

I've seen many wonderful photos that are including borders of mulitple colors and sizes. If someone posts one with this addition, is it appropriate to comment on the border? Or is it about personal style to be left alone?
For me, many borders (especially those with colors) are distracting from the actual image. I typically prescribe to the idea that if someone wants comments on the presentation, they'll ask, so I haven't mentioned the border. What is your take?

My take is that if a border is included in an image it's fine to comment on it if you want to. I say that because we already comment on pretty much everything else about personal style, so I don't see any reason to exclude borders. My personal style is to use borders very occasionally and almost always only with photo art. I commented on a border once, that I thought a different color would work better.

Anne,

I think commenting on presentation is fair game. I know I use to have a gold frame around all my images (because that's how it was on my website,) but I received enough and consistent feedback about the frame color that I went with a neutral black, narrow frame.

People have also commented on someone's signature/watermark on an image. We all know about copying images, but sometimes the watermark is so obtrusive that one can't really make a proper evaluation of the image. Kind of a catch 22.

Like all comments and critiques, if said politely and constructively I don't see a problem at with commenting on border, color, framing, etc.

Borders are definitely a big part of the presentation and as such are fair game for comments. They can make or break the image.

Anne,

I agree with the comments already made.

Definitely fair game IMO Anne.

Hey Anne - I'll use just a one or two pixel border (if any) for posting to forums and this is just on select images. Anything more with various colors just cheapens the image IMHO. - Vince

The border or frame is part of the presentation, and can surely be part of a critique, imo. I know a lot of people don't like my frames, but, as an artist, an image feels very incomplete to me without one.
I doubt many people hang an image on a wall without a frame or mat, and to me presenting an image here with a frame is no different.
