Mark asked about NIK filters. Here is a rundown of my favorite options in the NIK lineup. I have them in alphabetic order, not by my preference. Each option has sliders to give you the option of how strong the effect is, and also has brushes so that the effect can be put in just certain areas. Download a fee trial, and try some of these.
B&W Conversion - does a reasonable job of converting
Classic Soft Focus - Excellent
Contrast Color Range
Darken/Lighten Center - You can also lighten the edges and darken the center
Glamour Glow - Love this very light orton effect
Graduated Blue - Sky too white? Add a touch of blue.
High Key
Low Key
Reflector Effect
Skylight
Solarization - Many different infrared effects both in color and b&w
Sunshine - Can be a little overpowering.
Vignette - Many different options
White Neutralizer
There are many more to play around with, but these are my favorites.
As I said download a free trial and play around to see if you want to put out the money. They occasionally have a sale, but not often.

Also, if anyone is in the education field, you can get a 50% discount off any of their products, but you have to call to order.

Pat,
This is great.Thank you. I just wanted to mention that I love the neutral density filter for working landscapes.
Thanks for doing this.

Guess this shows how different we all process our work, I utilize Nik filters on possibly 90% of work but usually none of the presets mentioned.

Pat, I suspect that I'm the Mark that you're referring to and I have to apologize for not seeing your post sooner. I'll check out NIK later tonight and see what fun I can have. Thanks for the info.
