Julie’s trip report (in brief):
I just got back from a sunny, warm, and relaxing trip to Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Photographically this area that lies just 50 minutes South of Cancun airport, in Mexico’s Riviera Maya, offers a diverse array of scenery and animals that will be of interest. The Riviera Maya strip is flanked by the Caribbean Sea on one side and the jungles of the Yucatan on the other.
The wide, white sand beaches are endless and provide photo opportunities galore with fabulous sunrise with colors so brilliant no post-processing adjustments are needed! The jungle presents
the wild side with butterflies, iguanas too numerous to count, wild Koati, wild pigs, wild tapir-looking mammals I still have yet to identify & more.
Nearby is the Mayan archaeological site at Tulum. There is a high concentration of Mayan Indians in this area. Photographically, it’s amazing and exhilarating!
The local people are very friendly and happy to have their photos taken, as long as you ask first.
If you go, be sure to take along a cheapie underwater camera ($10 at Walmart). There are great areas where you can snorkel over coral reefs, swim with giant sea turtles, or tube down a bamboo lined green river.
I’d love to go here every year just to unwind! And to take more photos, of course! Playa del Carmen is one place I will definitely want to return to!

See my new photos from Playa del Carmen, Mexico by looking in the "Mexico: Playa del Carmen" album on my website.

IMPORTANT: when you get to the Mexico: Playa del Carmen album on the website, select the SLIDESHOW option (upper right side) to see the photos as they are meant to be viewed. :jump:

You're right, Playa del Carmen is a great, safe place to visit. I really enjoyed your website, also.
Do you do any trips to Colombia? That's my favorite country to explore.
