Cades Cove & Smokey Mountains
Hello, I live in Tampa Florida but own a home in Waynesville, NC and spend long weekends and occassional weeklong times there.

I spend time there looking for great places to photograph.

I don't know good places yet other than Cades Cove which is a few hours drive for me. It might be worth spending the night near there when I know the weather will be good for photos.

I haven't been since they updated the road. I'd like to get there early and to see some animals. If anyone has some good advice, I'm all ears.

The roadwork in the Great Smoky Mountain NP is pretty much complete, but many roads are still closed for the winter due to ice and snow. Check the GSMNP website for up to date road conditions and closings. The road around Cades Cove is pretty much as it was but without the pot holes and broken pavement. Much nicer drive. I was in Cataloochee Valley (I assume that is where you got that Elk shot) last fall and the dirt road over the mountain was in pretty good shape. A lot could have changed since then.

If your looking for other places in the park be sure to check out the Greenbriar and Tremont areas. There are so many places to choose from you can spend weeks there.

From Waynesville, I suggest taking some time and head east into Brevard & Transylvania County for the waterfalls. It's some of the most beautiful scenery around. Spend the day hiking DuPont State Forest.
