When I first found this site nearly 2 years ago I was shooting nature photos with a Fuji S5000, which was like cheating after using a so-so 35mm for 30 years. But then I saw what you guys were posting here and I thought... CHEATERS!
So I did some research and bought a very expensive (in my mind) Nikon D70 with the kit lens and a "something-to-300mm" telephoto. I put it on my rickety Wal-Mart tripod and fired it up. Now I was ready! but my pictures STILL didn't look like the ones Bob and Garth and Dick and Guy and numerous others posted! CHEATERS!
So I upgraded lenses and tripods and ball heads and lenses again and ball heads again and added a good flash and calibrated my monitor and VIOLA! I actually got a few good pics! But I still didn't get as many as you CHEATERS!
Well I finally got my first Wimberley Gimbal Head today...YOU CHEATERS! No wonder you get such great shots! How can you miss with one of these? This is AWESOME!
So what will be my excuse now?
I still don't have a 600mm f/4! So if you were wondering what to get me for Christmas...
Its a proven fact that a photographers success is directly proportional to how much money they throw into equipment.

Really, I came to the conclusion that the single most important piece of gear is a tripod. Another thing is along with gathering more stuff, you have also been gathering more skill.

Dang, Carl...can't you speak Southern??
VIOLA is the Tennessee pronunciation of voila and the definition is "Hey, y'all...lookie here!"

I just got my 600mm IS US and wimberly head within the last month. Althought I have only had a few opportunities to use them, they are a GREAT combination. I am just waiting on some decent weather here in Ohio. Plus, as a school teacher I will have all summer to travel.
I have recently bought a Canon 600 f/4 EF L IS USM VIOLA as well (it should arrive next week) and I'm in the list for the Wimberley WH-200...can't wait!

I think I have found my calling. Symphonies written and tuned for the ultrasonic motors of the Canon lens line. We may not be able to appreciate them, but our dogs sure will!
Thanks guys! Now I can justify the purchase of the 600, the bass of my upcoming compositions.

People are allways asking me what they can buy next to improve their photography. I ask to look at some pix that they have made, and after looking at them the photo equiment I send them out for most often is a Big Ben alarm clock to be placed on the other side of the room. Most outstanding photos are shot in early morning light or the last light of the day. Take mom to lunch in the flat light of mid day.
Damn,
2002 - I need a MF camera for those nice pictures...my EOS sucks.
2003- May be 645 is ok, 67 will be heavy.
mid 2003 - Darn if am carrying 645 why not 67 that will give me a larger frame.
2004 - 67 is nice but DOF is making my pictures look bad.
2005 - may be LF will do the trick.
2006 - damn, film sucks - you have to scan it, then correct. my pictures look really really bad. May be I need a Dslr, 5D--umm may be a little costlier, lets try those small sensors in Rebel!
A circle is complete...actually not really, my EOS still gave me a 35mm frame not APS.
PS: Ok, ok I'm still using MF.

An inexperienced photographer TAKES a lot of bad PICTURES.
An experienced photographer MAKES a lot of bad IMAGES.
no matter what the equipment!
