I saw the 60 minutes feature on the boob tube. It was truely a boarderline case of violating freedom of speech in my view. Not so long ago I read "State of Fear" by Michael Crichton. It has a fiction story line, but weaves in plenty of interesting scientific data contradicting the theories of global warming. It's good to view the other side of things and this book is not only a fun and quick read, but also gives a person something to think about. If I recall one of the stories correctly, a US Congress person held up this book in a Congressional session and suggested that everyone needed to read this book to become more educated on the global warming issues. As someone once said, by the time we unconditionally prove that global warming is real and a result of man's activities, it will be too late.
At the very least, the 60 mintues show was a prime example of showing that what we hear, read, or see through the media is way to often what "they" want us to hear.
As someone once said, by the time we unconditionally prove that global warming is real and a result of man's activities, it will be too late.
Global warming IS real, and SOME of man's activities bear responsibility. It's been proven. Now, do we have the courage and foresight to alter our ways for the betterment of the planet and future generations, or will we just arrogantly and greedily blaze ahead in search of the almighty dollar?
Only when the last tree has died & the last river has been poisoned & the last fish has been caught will we realize that we cannot eat money. Cree proverb
Our Leader is so wise and prudent, I am sure when the credibilty of the evidence rises to the same level as the Iraqi WMD evidence he will attack global warming.
Because the bulk of hydrocarbon emissions are the result of electric generation and car and truck exhaust, it's fortunately easy for us as individuals to at least try to help. We don't need a wise president to do that much. If I recall, at least half of the voters actually selected our president. Therein lies a bigger problem.
- - I'm all for global warming . I hate cold weather anyway.
Besides, who cares if NY, LA, and DC are under 50 feet of ocean?
With any luck the water may take a lot of politicians with it!
But then again, that would just polute that even more.
1) Reducing emissions while continuing unchecked population growth will at best delay the effect, not prevent it. A thousand people driving Hummers still produce less emissions than a million people driving Priuses
2) Global warming is pretty much inevitable. In 4 billion years (give or take) the Earth will be burned by the sun anyway. The real question is how good of a legacy we'd like to leave for however many future generations still remain. We're not doing it for the Earth or for the "Environment" (howver you choose to define it) - we're doing it for our own flesh and blood - our own children and grandchildren and their offspring.
3) Charbroilers and meat cooking is a huge but seldom discussed source of emissions. Combined with the "natural" emissions of various farm animals make farming and the consumption of meat major contributors to the warming effect. It's not all about SUVs.
Guys Quote - "we're doing it for our own flesh and blood - our own children and grandchildren and their offspring."
- - It may be that way on whatever planet you seem to be living, but it is not that way on this one.
Explain this to me, anyone;,,, Let's say that at least MOST of the people in the world REALLY do care about their own children, and their children's children, and just for now, let's say only their own children,,,
then why is it that the LARGE majority of these parents never stand up, or speak up, against all those who are destroying their own childrens future, let alone actually DO anything about it? WHY isn't the Congress of this country, and every country, receiving tons of letters DEMANDING change be made HERE & NOW, and not in some future generation after they are no longer around to have to worry about it? WHY aren't all of these, (so-called) loving and caring parents in the streets raising hell day after day, until they can no longer be ignored, as the FEW who do have the backbone to speak up now are all ignored?
It is not hard to see why people don't stand up for other people's children, as cowardly as that also is, as most of them only care about their own interests, but I don't see hardly anyone even standing up for their own kids future. So just where are all of these people who are doing it, "for our own flesh and blood?"
How many lertters and emails have gone out to Congress from all of those here who you always hear from when it comes to feeding a bird or two, but from who I have yet to see much about when it comes to their own childrens furures? How many letters has anyone here sent in the past year? How many e-mails have you sent to Congress, or just your own local newspaper? I would bet that most people could count them both on just one hand.
So, who's fault is it really when little or nothing gets changed for the better, no matter who's future it is for?
I don't blame politicians one bit for being the lying, thieving, bought-n-paid-for TRAITORS that they are.
I blame "THE PEOPLE" who allow them to be that way!
People who don't have the backbone to even stand up for their own rights.
And before you ask,
I make my voice heard by my city, state, and congress, as well as most of the news media
NO LESS than once a week, if not more.
And I DO NOT hesitate to let them know EXACTLY what I think of them and what they are doing,
and even the RARE times that it is something good.
Paul, I was trying to make a point (in fact the same one you so eloquently expanded on above). The context of any such action should not be the domain of fringe environmentalists. The environment will be just fine after we're all gone, and yes - after the Earth itself is gone. The context should be one that involves everyone because it will impact everyone.
- Yes, I know what the point was that you were trying to make.
I made my point because what you said is eactly what I hear 99.9% of everyone else say,
but those same people will do nothing about any of it.
They will all run their mouths about all of the problems they have to live with,
but won't get off their fat lazy butts, from in front of their mindless
reality TV programs to actaully do anything.
So what I can't help but wonder is, where are all of these people who you hear "say" that they care?
And even more importantlly; how much can a person care about something, or someone,
when they won't even bother trying to protect them and their future?
To me, I don't see where very many people even care about their own children,
so how could they ever care about anyone or anything else?
The environment is just one of the millions of things that get neglected when people
don't care about anything that does not benefit them that moment, and most of them seem to be
too stupid to even know that it will end up hurting themselves somewhere down the line.
If they are too lazy and indifferent to protect their own futures,
what chance do their children have?
Bottom line how I see it is that MOST parents don't give a dam what kind of a world their own kids have to live in after they are gone, and they could care even less how much it will take to pay to fix the mess they leave behind. A $1M clean up now is not going to stiil only cost $1M in 20-years. People's greed now will do nothing but steal from their own children's pockets tomorrow, but they don't care, because greed is the only way they know how to live, AND greed is the one and only major cause of every problem in the world.
You can not follow any problem back that does not start out with some one's greedy self interest.
That goes as much for just seeing to it that a child gets one warm meal a day, to global warming that melts down the poles, and there are plenty of people who will allow a child to go hungry if it makes them a profit.
Alll you have to do to see that, is take a look at Congress!
This is The United States and there are children who STARVE TO DEATH here every day.
With all due respect, Paul, what you personally do pales in comparison to what educating the public can achieve. You may be doing all the right things yourself but spouting vitriol at everyone else probably only serve to alienate and make them dig their heels even more. In this case I think I actually agree with you and even with that agreement I feel offended by your previous post.

- - I said; "how I see it is that MOST parents don't give a dam what kind of a world their own kids have to live in"
I said NOTHING about everyone is that way, or that you are that way. I said, (if you'd bother to take the time to read it,) that the people I SEE act that way, and if that were not true, then explain why children have the least rights of anyone in the whole world, because if MOST parents DID care, then they would have done something about that fact a long time ago. Since nothing has changed then all I can see why is that too few parents cared enough to do anything about it.
I do not know everyone so I can not, and DID NOT, say that everyone is that way.
I am saying only that 99% of those that I see in daily life are that way.
Back in the "hippy days" there was a popular saying that went,
"If you are not a part of the solution, then you are a part of the polution."
I see NO difference with that and the people now who talk a lot, but DO NOTHING to make any change.
That includes war, polution, endangered wildlife, or the future they leave for their own children.
So, maybe I should have said this before, as I had thought about doing.
So I'll say it now;,,
