I'll be in Anchorage overnight on August 16 on the way to a week with Grizzlies/puffins and have from about 5-10pm free.
Any suggestions for birding places not too far away?

Thenks!

Hello Sandy,
Potter's Marsh and Winchester Lagoon can be good for waterfowl. I hope your trip goes great! Safe travels :toast:

Sandy -

Glad to hear you are visiting Alaska. There's not going to be a lot left around on August 16, especially with just a five hour window. Gulls and waterfowl at Potter Marsh and Westchester Lagoon, probably, and maybe Sandhill Cranes out at the Palmer Hayflats. You might check the Alaska Rare Bird Alerts when you get closer just to see if anything unusual has turned up. Let me know if you need directions to any of these places.

Good luck, and have a safe trip.

A third vote for Potter's Marsh - along with the waterfowl, there was a brown bear and moose there the other day!

Ron, That gets my vote too, then! Thanks!

If the birding at Potter is too slow Sandy, drive another 9-10 miles down the Seward just beyond Indian. Dall sheep frequently come down to the highway in that area, and you may give your long lenses some serious exercise. They're generally easy to spot in any case, but keep your eye open for "sheep jams" not unlike the bear jams in Yellowstone. And one foot on the brake!
