Chris Dekle with the Georgia Nature Photographer's Association would be the person to ask. He can be reached at president@gnpa.org

Here is an URL you can check out. I've never been there, so use your judgement.

Go out SE end of town to Panola Mtn State Park. Great location with a granite manodnock and isloated islands of vegetation scattered all over the large rock faces. Great opportunity to shoot rare and endemic species out there. Here is a link

Sweetwater Creek State Park is the most scenic area in town. Right off I-20 on the west side so it's very convenient. Has a very wilderness feel to it for being so close to the city. (http://www.friendsofsweetwatercreek.org/)

Also there are many access points right in town to the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. (http://www.nps.gov/chat/index.htm)

If you have most of the day while your wife is at the conference, its less than 90 minutes to the Chattahoochee National Forest in the north Georgia mountains. Many easy day trip possibilities. Amicalola State Park is another good option up there. (http://www.amicalolafalls.com/)

Sweetwater Creek would be my choice also Joe. Really close by and not at all like being near Atlanta.
