I have a 20D and am thinking of getting the Canon 500 lens. Will this keep AF with a 1.4 converter with the 20D?

Yes. You need at least f/5.6 to get AF with 20D, and since f/4+1.4x= f/5.6 you get AF

What Juza said. The 500 is a beauty, too!

You will not regret the investment. The lens is very expensive, but when you actually use it and realize the many features built in while getting the sharpest images you can imagine the price is justifiable. BTW, I bought an "import" version from B&H and saved a few $$. If you can have it sent to a locatio where sales tax will not be charged it will also help you.

I bought a 500L IS lense and the 1.4 extender will allow AF. It is very expensive but worth every penny. Using it with a sturdy tripod and allowing the IS to work will give you great pictures. I use it everyday here in florida and get great results.
