Out of cusiousity I looked at the first page on ESS. On average images have 10.65 comments. This includes images just recently posted (so a better indicator may be the second page) but is still more than double what I'm seeing on other critique sites of this type.

I noticed the other day that the photos on ESS have really been top notch lately. I'm quite impressed and amazed. It seems like everyone has really taken a step up.
to you all!

Thanks to the ESS moderators, visitors, and posters; I have had a great time posting and commenting there lately! Thank you!
Do you think Bill C`s "how to generate more critique" thread actually helped to generate more critiques?

Yes. I think occassional discussion on the subject is beneficial.

I wish that thread was the reason, but I personally think the quality of images has taken a giant step forward of late. It looks to me like everyone is really putting their best foot forward and posting some really killer images. Lots of inspriation being posted right now - I think this gets the creative juices flowing and the excitement level higher. The really nice thing about the increased level of particpation is that everybody's game improves. Call it inspiration, competition, or whatever you want to call it. Let's hope it continues - that part's up to each of us individually.
re: the quality of images stepping forward and "killer" images -
I think the level has been sky high for some time already - so high that it gets scary to post anything from my humble pile of negatives. So maybe here`s another reason for the high lurker concentration on NPN. Never mind the friendly atmosphere, NPN doesn`t look like your grandpa`s forum for photography newbies. I`m pretty sure many beginners are intimidated to post their images on a site where they see people pick nits on publication quality work. (Not that we should set a talent limit so everyone would feel OK... no stagnation please.)
just my $0.02 (about 30 of these 2-cent posts could buy me a bottle of decent Estonian lager )
While its understandable to worry about and discuss the number of comments the posted images generate, lets not forget the number of views data point. It serves to indicate how many people are viewing the posted images. If these viewers are like me, I am sure they would have gained much by simply studying the images on display. As others have mentioned, the posters here on NPN are among the most talented nature photographers of today. Getting to see such an exceptional display of work on a single web-site ~ on a daily basis ~ is reason enough for me to be a member of NPN.
I have obtained valuable feedback from the folks who comment on my photos, but I have to say that I have learnt much more by [carefully] studying the beautiful creations of the other artists who are part of this community.

I have also noticed the high quality of images posted lately in the ESS forum. It's always inspiring, keep it up you guys. I know I have learned a great deal over the past few years and my photography has improved greatly because of this community. Thanks all.
