Hey all! I have been swamped and consumed by my portrait business as of lately. I am sneaking away during spring break, (next week) and camping at Blanchard with my family. I am planning on taking a couple of day hikes to some waterfalls if their running well. So my question to all of you priveleged ones who get to stay up in that area is:

Are the waterfalls worth hiking to yet?

I know 4-wheelers arent allowed in the forest, (I guess) but are they allowed on the jeep roads? I dont have a 4-wheel drive truck so I was planning on taking my 4wheeler to reduce the hike time.

Any locations you suggest? I hope to get a good experience with Twin Falls in the Richland Creek Wilderness.

Thanks for the help in advance,

Matt Terry

Hey Matt, glad to hear you are working a lot behind the camera and going to the bank!

We had some great waterfalls this past few days, but I suspect they will die down this week pretty qucikly. However, now that the ground is saturated it won't take too much rain (several inches) to bring them back up again. Normally they are up and running at peak flows this month, but the drought has changed all of that.

ATVs are not allowed anywhere in the national PARK - that is Buffalo National River. The are allowed in some places in the national FOREST (Ozark National Forest, which includes the area around Blanchard and Richland Creek), although you would need to check with the forest service folks in Mountain View to see what their specific policies are for the Blanchard area - 870-269-3228. Vehicles - motorized or non - are never allowed within a wilderness area such as Richland Creek (this includes ATVs and mountain bikes).

The Sylamore area of the Ozark National Forest has some wonderful waterfalls, and I hope to make a trip or tree over there in the next few weeks myself. Hope you get some great photos!
