Equipment question - New camera, old flash

I am finally about to make the move to digital from an old Canon A2. :jump: My question is about using an old Canon flash with a new body. About the only time I use the flash is with a Better Beamer. Would the features of a new 580ex Flash have an advantage over my old 540ez for this use?

Thanks!

Check the manual with the camera. They are usually really explicit in detailing which flashes will and won't work, as well as which features you will lose in using an older flash on a newer model. Most will work in purely manual mode, but TTL, proportionate fill, redeye reduction, and a lot of other similar functions requiring interaction with the camera's electronics may not. Can't help you on those specific models, but you can probably find the same info in the camera specs online, in addition to the users guide.
