If planning a trip to Roan Mtn, be aware that the recreational area is scheduled to be closed most of the year due to a massive renovation project being funded by federal stimulus money.
The Roan Mountain Recreational Area in Pisgah National Forest will only be open during the rhododendron blooming season, from June 6 to July 7 this year.
Good info. Can you please clarify the extent of the "recreational area"? Does that include the aforementioned balds or just the public areas on the other side of the road?

Steve, thanks. For some reason I was thinking the high balds at Roan peaked more like the 20th-23rd. If they are peaking the weekend of the 14th maybe I can do it. . .

I'm pretty sure it's just the public areas across the street from the balds. You should still be able to park at the small lot at the intersection and hike up to the balds on the AT. Their website provides no information that I can find. Only thing I have is from other sites/newspapers.
