In their defense, at least they limit it to their own promotional usage :

The user retains the rights to all of his or her media, and by submitting, grants permission to Lafango.com to display or use in any promotional material.

Some of these contests specify that they completely own the rights to submissions, and can even re-sell the image. Those ones get a  and a double   . This one, I'll just give a patented Pennington  .

You know, if these folks had a lick of sense, they'd just go to the microstock sources and buy their photos for a buck a pop. Cheaper in the long run, I'm sure.

But nooooooo..... They'd rather trick the innocent into giving away their photos. Hard to imagine striving for one notch lower than the microstrock schemes, but there you have it.

What is it in particular about "this contest" that is causing everyone to become so agitated? Is it mentioned anywhere that you are giving up the rights to your photo(s) when you submit? From a cursory glance of the rules, I only noticed that they want to use the pictures for promotional purposes (as mentioned by David above). What is so wrong with this? Most reputable photo competitions have been doing this for a long time. Am I missing something?

By entering this contest, all contestants hereby consent (except where prohibited) to the use by Lafango of the contestant's name, age, photograph, voice, likeness, and/or image, hometown address, and entry without any further compensation.

Hi Hank,

From reading paragraph you quote above, it appears that 'photograph' refers to a picture "of" the photographer (aka mug-shot), rather than the photo being submitted into the competition. That is why it has been lumped in with the other identification information such as name, age, address, etc.

I am curious though how they plan to use this information and why they had to explicitly state that its use requires no further compensastion.

Anil,

The first hint that this is bogus is that the post was made by a non-member and is very generic. It just screams spam/scam whatever you want to call it

You got it. The only reason I'd give them that info is so they could mail me a check (certified check, of course). Since there are no ads and they don't charge for membership or entries, how are they generating income, much less the prizes? Goodness of their hearts? Yeah, and the tooth fairy.

Here phishy, phishy. Here little phish.

I could be very wrong here, but I thought most competitions only had the winners turn over some rights for promotional use. In most of these types of contests, EVERY image can be used for promotional purposes. Is that the more traditional norm?

Hi David,

Here are two examples of international photography competitions:

1) Check out the 'Use of Photograph' section in the following web-page for "Photography Masters Cup -- International Color Awards."

2) See the 'Use of Images' section here in the rules page for "International Photography Awards."

Note that they refer to all photographs that are entered, not just the winning ones.

These international contests attract some of the best photographers from around the world (pro and amateur) and they are apparently okay with the rules.

Well guys your queries seems to endless,i would suggest ya people either to participate in the contest and judge whether we are doing anything wrong or in your terms ''misusing your stuff''.
And if you still have any queries left, you can always email me,if you wanna anything else.
One thing i can guarantee is that this contest is only for talented photographers like you people, and i would be very happy to see,if the winner who will get $1000 comes from this forum member..

A: There is no monetary remuneration for the use of your image, however in the case that it is being used for something other than the promotion of the competition, you will be contacted and given the option to decline the use of your work.
I got this from the IPA site mentioned by Anil. Doe this statement protect you from other usage since they apparently give you the option to decline? I considered entering this one. Bad idea?
