Does anyone have experience photographing coastal wild horses/ponies? If so where is the best area on the east coast to gain access to them. I've read some about the Outer Banks, NC and Cumberland Island, GA but experience is the best teacher...so if you could share your advice I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Corolla on the Outer Banks is very popular for wild horses.

Cumberland Island is another excellent place for wild horses - they are all over the island. The trick is catching them in good light and in a good location. If you stay at Sea Camp, a good place to see them is the beach and marsh close to Dungeness Ruins. I'm sure the Rangers could give you more info as well.

Cumberland is super! Might catch them AT the Dungeness ruins. They move all around the place.

There are some neat shooting opportunities in Beaufort, NC & at Cape Lookout, NC. You can view horses many times from the mainland in Beaufort looking across Taylor's Creek. If you wanted to take a boat across, the creek is only about 100 feet wide. There are also a large herd of horses on Shacklford Banks - Cape Lookout National Seashore - you'll need a boat to get there. Here's a PDF of the horses - http://www.nps.gov/calo/planyourvisit/upload/horse2004.pdf. Here's another site talking about them - http://www.shacklefordhorses.org/
