Is this a female Hooded Oriole?. I photographed it in San Ignacio in Baja California Sur, Mexico Shortly before seeing a male Hooded Oriole just up the road.

From the angle you've captured, I can't tell between a female Hooded Oriole and a female Orchard Oriole. The wings bars are very strong and make think Orchard, but the chest lacks the greenish cast I'd expect. Do you have another shot that shows the head better?

Cindy, thanks for the link and Jim, no I don't have another shot of the female. I do have some shots of a male which I have had another look at and now I am not convinced that it was a Hooded Oriole. The only reason I discounted Orchard Oriole was the fact that Sibley doesn't show it in Baja on the distribution map! I have posted some pics of the male to see what you think. Thanks for your input so far.

I forgot to mention that these photographs were all taken in early February this year!

Your male is definitely a Hooded Oriole. For the female, it looks fine for Hooded--I can't see anything that suggests otherwise, although it's not a great angle. Hooded would be the expected species--the southern half of Baja is year-round range for them.

I was taught not to attach a lot of significance to the range maps for Mexico; that there just hasn't been enough research work done down there to support firm conclusions. I agree with Brian on your male Hooded Oriole shots. They offer some support for the female being a Hooded. On the other hand, those are very wide, very white wing bars. Bottom line: I dunno.
