I've never done this before so please bear with me, I wish to register a domain name. I know there are companies out there that I can register with but I'm looking for one that is reliable and doesn't charge an arm and a leg. Which one/s are the most popular?
Also, I wish to have a .com address and my IP won't allow it. How do I go about this?
Sorry for the lack of knowledge in this area and thanks for your advice.
I have domains registered with Network Solutions and with GoDaddy. Both have been trouble free. If I were to register another, I would probably use Network Solutions. NS has good web hosting options.
Network Solutions does a good job but the unrelenting marketing - you can't go through any step without turning down 2-3 special offers - can grate after a while. GoDaddy is more straightforward and slightly less expensive.
Have registered several domain names through GoDaddy. They do run a lot of "specials" - "x" percent off, often .com names. If you are serious about the name, you might wnat to register it for a longer time period. The per year cost goes down for first time registery. Renewing after the time period generally more costly.
I registered my domain name through Intuit a few months ago and have been very satisfied with price and ease of use. I'm not a web designer, but I'm very pleased with intuit's system - easy to use!
I have several domains registered with GoDaddy and I also have two domains registered through Fat Cow. Both have been very satisfactory.

I would have to also recommend Go Daddy. I have 4 registered domains through them. I have had to call and speak with customer service, it was fast and very helpful and I even received a discount on a renewal over the phone that had not yet been advertised. They have been great for me.
Thanks again everyone. I went ahead and used Go Daddy, they appear to be very professional and have a lot of available options that I may be interested in sometime in the future. Besides, I like Danica...
