Adirondack Life has again confirmed my thought that magazine photo contests are a joke. The third place color winner was an image of someones foot near a water fall. This has to be about as bad as it gets. You could barely see the water. Do the people who run these contests know anything about photography? I think not.

I haven't bothered to enter Adirondack Life's photo contest in years. I believe the winners are chosen by the editors and no, they are not photographers. Their choices are very spotty in quality. The prize for winning is a hand-thrown bowl, or was last time I looked. From a nature & landscape photographer's perspective the magazine has gone downhill in recent years, catering more to the wealthy second home crowd than to native Adirondackers. Lots of features about fine (second) homes in the woods and cultural events that appeal to that group. From what I understand the change in focus was due to fiscal problems. They had to go where the market was. I wish there was an Adirondack magazine that was the equivalent of Arizona Highways or at least the Arizona Highways that I remember from the '60s. To be honest I haven't seen a copy of it in many years maybe AH has gone the same way if it still exists.
