If you want to go, go before Monday March 1st. The Cades Cove Loop Road closes until May 21st on Monday.

Steve, in addition to repaving is the road going to be widened in some spots to make it easier for people to pull to the side and get around cars?

I knew about the closing but my question is does anyone know if we can still drive to the parking lot and hike in or will it be closed to that also. I would like to go up in April and thought it might be a good chance for some early morning fog and NO CARS. I'm sorry did I say that to loud?

Bruce, you will not be able to access the interior of the cove by foot or any other means. This is from a GSMIT email I received today:

During the closure period all access to the Loop Road as well as the
interior of the Loop Road will be closed to all visitor access whether by
horse, bicycle or on foot. Access will also be cut off to trails that are
reached via the Loop Road. The Park’s Web site has complete information on the Cades Cove project as well as work going on throughout the Park at: http://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/temproadclose.htm

Thanks Lori. Thats what I was thinking would happen but I had not taken the time to check up on it. But then I still have a little while until April. I will check out the link and then I guess modify my plans.

"Steve, in addition to repaving is the road going to be widened in some spots to make it easier for people to pull to the side and get around cars? "

Ed, I don't really know but if I interpret those flags I see in places, the answer might be "yes".

However, I have confidence that even if the road was six lanes, tourons would still block all six to gawk at deer.
